Historical Timeline

EU ETS Milestones

EU ETS is the European Union’s emissions trading system for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Companies meet their obligations by surrendering EUAs corresponding to their emissions.

Regulation

EU ETS Entered into Force

Europe’s first major carbon trading market was launched, and EUA trading began.

2005

Expansion

Aviation Was Included

The aviation sector joined the system, expanding demand for EUAs.

2012

Transformation

Phase 3

National cap systems were replaced by a single EU-wide cap, making the EU ETS more centralized, transparent, and market-driven.

2013–2020

Expansion

Maritime Was Included

The maritime sector was included in the EU ETS. EUA surrender obligations increased from 40% in 2024 to 100% in 2027, with CH₄ and N₂O also included from 2026.

2024

Emissions Target

62% Emissions Reduction

EU ETS emissions are targeted to be reduced by 62% compared to 2005 levels.
